From Anti-Mui Tsai Society to Secretariat for Chinese Affairs.
27th July, 1929.
Ching Ngai Shi, a native of Po Sum village, Samshui District,
came to Hong Kong on the 25th day of 5th moon (1.e. 1/7/29)
when she sold to Wong Yun Lam, a merchant residing at No 398
Queen's Road West, Ist floor, her own daughter named Ah Moy,
8 years of age, as Mui Tsai, for the sum of $/ 95.00
The name of the girl has since been changed to Yut Ha.
On the 12th day of 6th moon (i.e. 18/7/29) Wong Lo Shi wrote
to her mother-in-law in the country, requesting her to inform
Ching Ngai Shi to come to Hong Kong in order to talk over the
matter concerning her daughter.
On the 14th day of 6th moon (i.e.20/7/29) Ching Ngai
Shi called on Wong Lo Shi accordingly. Then Wong Lo Shi told
the mother that ever since she bought her daughter, she met
with no end of bad luck, inasmuch as her husband had been 111
time and again. Wong Lo Shi therefore urged Ching Ngai Shi
to redeem her daughter at once ,in default of which she would
have to raise the money by re-selling the girl to somebody
else. Ching Ngai Shi is unable to raise any money for the
purpose, and at the same time she das not like her daughter to
be re-sold. In the circumstances, she has no other alterna-
tive but to appeal to the Society for assistance in the matter.
The Mistress (Wong Lo Shi) does not permit the girl to see her
mother at present. Ching Ngai Shi is temporarily at 29 Bridge St.
